Investment Circle: Cleaner, Decentralized Electrical Power - Where We're Headed: 12:00p -2:00pm - Please RSVP
The electric power industry is on the verge of a major transformation from its historically centralized structure to a cleaner, more resilient structure based on decentralized and renewable sources.

Dr. Peter Lilienthal created the HOMER software at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to match new distributed technologies to cost-effective applications. HOMER designs hybrid systems that combine existing power systems with new renewable sources, including storage and load management. These microgrids are the proving ground for "smart grid" technologies and have applications that range from tiny villages in Africa to military bases, such as Ft. Carson.

In 2009 Lilienthal created HOMER Energy with the exclusive license to the HOMER software, which has now been used by over 70,000 energy analysts in 193 countries. Dr. Lilienthal will talk about the larger trends that are causing an acceleration in this transition, the remaining obstacles, and the investment opportunities that will be created during this transition. Hosted by Member Sol Halpern.

Announcements

The following letter from City Club member Harvey Nichols is in last Friday's Boulder Camera. Several have appeared on the Camera's web site; this is the first to appear in print.

Jefferson Parkway: Beware of plutonium-contaminated dust

Reed Bailey's opinion: "Is Rocky Flats Wildlife Refuge safe?" entirely misses the point (Camera, Feb. 5th), by belaboring the subject of background radiation and deflecting attention from the real risk.

The scientists and physicians who have repeatedly warned the public  about this hazard are concerned right now that Jefferson Parkway construction along the refuge's eastern edge would raise  plutonium-contaminated dust, which would enter the lungs of workers and nearby residents.

A host of official studies shows that direct impact of tiny plutonium particles onto internal tissue causes cancer, a point that Mr. Bailey cannot honestly deny. Readers will of course consider the source of  the argument "It's safe enough" from a former employee of that notorious operation.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife, in charge of the refuge, officially admits  residual plutonium on site means that the refuge is "not ... pristine" (USFW letter, Oct. 21, 2003). My own Department of Energy contract work showed astronomical numbers of radionuclide particles  deposited there, and DOE-contractor Rockwell admitted at the State Capitol (Sept. 30, 1987) that they routinely emitted tiny airborne  plutonium particles for decades. The entire Rocky Flats Refuge was dusted with respirable plutonium: beware!

A Message From Peter Baumgartner

Dear fellow City Club Members,

Might you have interest in a relatively inexpensive (apprx. $120) weekend in the mountains with your City Club friends and their guests? While our minds are not likely on the summer heat, advance planning has it's benefits.

The Eiseman Hut is one of the newer cabins that make up the 10th Mountain Hut System. Eisman is well kept with cooking facilities both indoors and out. It can sleep 16 and is located on the mountain across the valley from East Vail. Cars can be driven within 2 miles of the hut.

Alternately, should you prefer, horses are available for hire and come with a guide familiar with the most scenic trail route. For those with powerful thighs mountain bikes can be ridden along a forest service road to the hut door.  Imagine City Club style happy hour, but just below tree line surrounded by mountain peaks. Hiking opportunities are unlimited and fun evening activities will evolve.

Dates being considered are Friday July 7th, July 8 and departing Sunday July 9. Please click here to express your interest to Matt. It's 5 months away, but reservations will have to be made by the end of March to assure availability.  We will need to have 16 people if we wish to have the cabin exclusively.

Sincerely,
Peter Baumgartner
